]]>1 Proper OS Explorer Maps.
With detail in 1:25,000 scale, these are the best for navigation- but you will need a load of them! However, they’re available for every section of the England Coast Path unlike some of the other options.
2 Ordnance Survey Landranger maps. These are great for planning, but we think they’re pretty useless for the micro-navigation you’ll need to do if ever you get lost.
3 A to Z Adventure Map are doing a series of maps on the England Coast Path that might be the most economical way to get full 1:25k coverage. There’s only a handful available at present, but at least they’ll be guaranteed to show the route of the England Coast Path!
4 Harveys provide a selection of mapping, but like the A to Z maps this isn’t full coverage. Neither is it guaranteed to be updated to incorporate the ECP, which you’ll need to check when buying the map.
We haven’t mentioned digital mapping here as that’s only a backup option and not a primary one! You will need a ‘paper’ map – ideally ones that are waterproof or otherwise well protected by a decent map case (Ortileb make some of the best).
Talking of navigation – visit our sister site – Mud and Routes – for a full course on how to use that map and compass – for free.
